•KD increases β-hydroxybutyrate blood levels, without affecting bodyweight.•KD does not affect cocaine-induced conditioned place preference in male mice.•The number of sessions required to extinguish the drug-associated memories are shorter with a KD.•Reinstatement of the preference induced by a priming dose of cocaine is blocked with a KD.
