Carbon isotopic composition of leaf wax n-alkanes in mangrove plants along a latitudinal gradient in Brazil

•Molecular and δ13C values from leaf wax n-alkanes of mangrove trees were determined.•The influence of tree physiology, local hydrology and climatic factors were evaluated.•Differences among species indicate distinct growth strategy and water use efficiency.•Plants respond to latitudinal climate variations.•Results may support future interpretations in biogeochemical and paleoclimate studies.
