•A dual-seed cascaded heavily erbium-doped fluoride fiber amplifier scheme was proposed.•The maximum power of 2.8 μm laser theoretically exceeds 100 W.•There is no excited state absorption at ∼1.675 μm in a heavily erbium-doped fluoride fiber laser.
