•Young Swiss men’s risky single-occasion drinking (RSOD) was examined.•Risk of RSOD was smaller in stricter alcohol policy environments (APEs).•Sensation seeking and antisocial personality disorder attenuated the relationship.•They additionally appeared to drive reactance against stricter APEs.•Stricter APEs should be combined with selective prevention targeting these factors.
