How reliable are administrative reports of paid work hours?

•We examine the quality of quarterly records on work hours collected to administer the unemployment insurance system.•We find that these records reliably measure paid hours of work.•Our findings have implications for analyzing work hours, for division bias, and for analyzing job-to-job flow.
