•A clear relation between social functioning and psychiatric symptoms in youth exists,•even in a (sub)clinical population with transdiagnostic symptoms.•This facilitates early intervention, even outside a clinical context.•Further research is needed to learn more about social functioning as a predictor,•and the added value of daily life versus retrospective measurements.
