•Temporal changes of wetness compensation effects on tree growth were investigated.•Compensation effects in Inner Asia was 2.5 times higher than the global average.•Spatio-temporal patterns of growth response to climate extremes became divergent.•Extra-compensation of tree growth by climate wetness was fading since 1980s.•Uncompensated decline in tree growth is important for the future carbon dynamics.
