•High-pressure treatment affected the microstructure of Chlorella vulgaris and Arthrospira platensis.•The gel rigidity of pressurized Chlorella was significantly lower than Spirulina cells.•The volumetric particle size distribution of Spirulina increased significantly at 600 MPa.•High-pressure had minor impacts on calorimetric endotherms.
