摘要
Despite efforts to optimize the Pickering emulsifica-tion process via various experimental and computational approaches, none delved into the dynamic inter-relationship between thefundamental phenomena that make up this process (i.e., dropletbreakage, droplet coalescence, and Pickering particle adsorption). This work paves the way to capture this link via population balancemodeling (PBM). To model the adsorption of polydispersed cellulosenanocrystals (CNCs) onto the interfaces of differently sized oildroplets during an ultrasound-assisted emulsification process, adynamic adsorption kernel was introduced to PBM with combineddroplet breakage and coalescence, thus forming adsorption-basedPBM (aPBM). Results show goodfine-grained and coarse-grainedpredictions for CNC-poor emulsion systems for an oil loading-to-emulsifier loading (OL/EL) ratio of +/- 4. The role of thepolydispersity of Pickering particles in promoting primary and secondary emulsion stability was also divulged from the aPBM. Owingto the functionality of the aPBM, future computational investigations may involve it as a core model framework, which can beamended for various applications.
