•Transnational Entrepreneurs (TEs) face significant challenges to succeed in host markets.•This study examines the set of conditions required for TEs to overcome the liability of outsidership (LO) in a host country.•Co-ethnic embeddedness, prior work experience in the host country, and the recognition of outsidership position are integral to offsetting the LO.
