One-stage conversion of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding to laparoscopic 1-anastomosis gastric bypass: a single-center experience on 1,000 patients at 5 years of follow-up

•Medium-term results regarding the use of OAGB as a conversion technique after LAGB failure are scarce in the literature.•The aim of the present study was to assess our experience with OAGB to evaluate whether it is an effective rescue procedure after failed LAGB and whether it gives comparable results to those of primary OAGB at 5 years of follow-up.•The weight loss and obesity-related comorbidity resolution at 5 years after surgery were comparable between patients with and without a history of gastric banding.•Patients with a previous gastric banding developed severe biliary reflux much more frequently and, consequently, were more likely to require a further conversion to LRYGB.
