Direct partitioning of eddy-covariance water and carbon dioxide fluxes into ground and plant components

•A simple technique to simultaneously partition ET and CO2 fluxes is proposed.•An intercomparison against two other methods is performed.•Model evaluation against independent flux component estimates shows promising results.•The main strengths and weaknesses of each approach are discussed.•The best partitioning practices for implementation of all three methods are outlined.
