•Eco-hydrological distributed models can validate spatial patterns of satellite SSM.•Differences in temporal and spatial dynamics of SSM products were found.•Multi-objective calibration (Q and SSM) increases the robustness of the modelling.•DISPATCH algorithm provided best spatial agreement compared to TETIS results.
