Optimal Location and Sizing of Battery Energy Storage System For Minimizing Power System Generation Cost

This paper proposes a methodology to determine the optimal location and sizing of a battery-based energy storage system in order to minimize generation cost in a power system. The methodology is based on the formulation of optimal power flows and includes the injection of renewable energy as well as the charge or discharge of the battery, according to the requirements of the electrical network, optimizing the costs of its operation. The formulated problem is a nonlinear mixed integer programming and its solution is implemented using the YALMIP interface to achieve to an optimal solution. Case studies are presented to show the effectiveness of the implemented methodology when distinct penetration levels of renewable sources are assumed for a period of time of operation of the electrical system.
