Impact of Sickle Cell Disease on the Treatment and Progression of Pediatric HIV

Background HIV and sickle cell disease (SCD) are significant causes of morbidity and mortality among pediatric populations in sub-Saharan Africa. They both, individually, adversely impact the immune system heightening the risk for severe infections. However, little is known on how these two chronic inflammatory illnesses interact.
