Suicide after contact with a national digital mental health service

•The rate and factors associated with suicide after contact with DMHS is not known•Data linkage found the rate of suicide in the 2 years after contact to be 0.11%, similar to that of equivalent face to face mental health services.•Risk factors for suicide to be male sex, recent separation, unemployment, and disclosing a suicide plan and a score of “3” on question 9 of the PHQ9.•There were few suicides around the time of contact and the average duration from last contact to suicide was nearly a year.•Well run DMHS, with robust safety procedures, appear to be as safe as face to face services.
