•This is the largest retrospective multicentre study comparing the frequencies of complications and survival rates of patients who received either pTHA or cTHA after FFN.•Patients with pTHA and cTHA after FFN have comparable frequencies of complications in their first year after surgery.•There is no difference in the short-term survival of pTHA and cTHA implants after FFN.
