Accelerating Phase-Field Simulations for HPC-Systems

In the last decades simulations have become a powerful tool to understand physical processes and accelerate the development of new products. A high computational effort is necessary to resolve these processes accurately with quantitative models. Especially for large-scale and massive parallel simulations a reduction of the total computational time results in a large reduction of the computational effort. In this work we present an explicit local time stepping approach to accelerate phase-field simulations of directional solidification. To efficiently store the simulation data, we also investigate the MPI-I/O write performance of voxel data on Hazel Hen’s ws8 Lustre filesystem.
