Effect of Geogrid on Landslide Prevention of Soil Slope Under Static Loading

For increasing the bearing capacity of different soil, many reinforcement techniques are available in which soil was reinforced with geotextile or geosynthetic is quite common and useful. In this study, a soil slope prototype is numerically analyzed under static loading to evaluate the effect of reinforcement placement on bearing capacity and slope stability at different slope angles of 30°, 40° and 50° using Plaxis 2D, a finite element software. The effect is analyzed for a strip footing of 1 m width, present at edge distance of 0, 1 and 2 m from the crest of the slope with the placement of biaxial geogrid, used for study of different geometrical parameters–namely first reinforcement depth, width of the reinforcement and number of reinforcement layers. Flat and wraparound end styling are being adopted for reinforcement placement. The main emphasis of this study is to evaluate which reinforcement styling prove to be more effective at different slope angle. Clayey-sand has been used for analysis which was represented using a nonlinear elastoplastic hyperbolic stress–strain model popularly known as the hardening soil model, whereas reinforcement was represented as elastoplastic to define nonlinear behavior of stress–strain. For calculation of slope stability, SRM (strength reduction method) also known as C-φ reduction method is used which is quite popular in FEM software. The results showed that wraparound styling proves to be more effective in increasing both bearing capacity and factor of safety than flat styling for all slope angles. It is also noticed that wraparound placement causes less horizontal displacement of soil, adding more stability to soil slopes. While analysis of stability, satisfactory slip circle is observed for 50° slope as compare to 30° and 40° slope.
