Microwave irradiated synthesis has always remained a focus area of research for the pharmaceutical and organic chemists due to the great associated advantages including high efficacy, faster reactions, rapid energy transfer, ease in handling, controlled and uniform heating, operational simplicity, environmental friendliness, and high productivity with less evaporation of solvents. On the other hand, heterocyclic scaffolds hold a special place among biologically important natural products and synthetic compounds required for the development of the human race. Thus, extensive efforts have been inculcated by organic and medicinal chemists to synthesize these derivatives following a variety of green protocols, particularly to circumvent increasing environmental concerns. In this regard, this chapter is reviewed on microwave-assisted protocols for the synthesis of medicinally important selected heterocycles with special focus on the literature covering the years 2007–19.
