Phase Noise Effects and Mitigation Techniques

Abstract The effect of phase noise in 5G is very relevant. With OFDM, correction schemes can combine phase noise reduction and channel estimation. In 5G, the use of multiple‐input‐multiple output requires the extension to MIMO‐OFDM, in particular using zero‐forcing (ZF) and maximum ratio transmission (MRT). The phase noise degradation shows a greater robustness of MRT, although with lower achievable rates, even with imperfect channel knowledge. In massive MIMO, hybrid analog–digital schemes are considered to reduce the complexity and different pre‐coding and combining schemes have different sensitivity to phase noise. The trade‐off between achievable rate and sensitivity to phase noise is shown.
