摘要
The shared variance between sensorimotor (hearing, vision, mobility) and cognitive processes (e.g., attention, memory) is often observed to be greater in late life than in young and middle adulthood. Empirical observations reflecting this developmental trend include cross‐sectional and longitudinal correlational, experimental, neuroimaging, and intervention studies. Theoretical explanations vary in the directionality of the influence between peripheral limitations (sensory/sensorimotor declines) and central limitations (higher level cognitive declines). The implications of such interdependencies are also discussed in terms of assessment and intervention considerations.
