摘要
Diabetes is occurring in epidemic proportions. In the general population in the developed world, approximately 8% of adults have diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes will double over the next 15 years or so to an estimated 300 million people by the year 2025. This is due almost totally to an increase in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). These figures are likely to understate the size of the problem as it has been estimated that up to one-half of affected patients in the general population remain undiagnosed. In addition up to double the number of patients who have diabetes have insulin resistance syndrome with a heightened risk of developing T2DM. This increase will be due mainly to an increasing prevalence of obesity, decreasing rates of physical activity, an increasing consumption of high calorie diets, and an ageing population.
