摘要
Globalization of the world economy depends upon the structure and organization of transport. In a historical context, shifts in the focus of global trade and colonial links can be linked to shifts in the organization and operation of transport. The most obvious effect is in the impact of change in the technology of transport, where innovations have allowed larger loads to be moved over longer distances at greater speeds. Those changes are felt in the role of individual cities in global activities, with some emerging as more important hubs while others are bypassed. Currently the arrangements that surround global supply chains, which include physical goods as well as logistical services, have reinforced some of these outcomes and a small number of seaports and airports now account for a very large share of global trade.
