Rupture of rock with discontinuities under blasting disturbance: Insights from discrete element method modeling

•Particle expansion algorithm was implemented within bonded particle models under blasting scenarios.•The contact force distribution, internal stress evolution and particle velocity were derived surrounding the discontinuities.•The crack propagation process of fractured rock was presented as the inclination angle of discontinuity changes.
