Diagnostic performance and predictive value of D-dimer testing in patients referred to the emergency department for suspected myocardial infarction

•D-dimer testing provided independent prognostic information on recurrent myocardial infarction (p = 0.0333) and all-cause mortality (p < 0.0001), even after adjustment for potential confounders.•Implementation of these results into clinical decision making could help in rapid triage and risk stratification of patients referred to the hospital for suspected myocardial infarction.•The diagnostic performance of D-dimer as a continuous biomarker to discriminate patients with ACS from non-coronary chest pain was moderate (AUC 0.646, 95% CI 0.63–0.66).
