•SBS SWIR spectra in relation to aging, roughness and sample thickness were studied.•The PLSR model built on raw data yields the lowest RMSEP.•The suitability of HSI for identifying the aging state of SBS was demonstrated.•The potential of HSI for aging state determination during plastic sorting was shown.
