The association of efficacy, optimism, uncertainty and health anxiety with inflammatory bowel disease activity

•Both positive and negative psychological attributes impact on IBD activity.•Higher self-efficacy was associated with lower likelihood of symptomatic flare.•Higher health anxiety was associated with greater likelihood of symptomatic flare.•Psychological attributes were not associated with increased intestinal inflammation.•Psychological attributes may be appropriate targets for intervention in IBD.
