•Electrooptical study displays large dipole moment of oligophenylenevinylene 1 in the fluorescent state.•DFT calculations show two conformers of 1 with close energies and nonplanar structures.•Dipole electric moment of 1 in the fluorescent state depends dramatically on the applied electric field.
