•No epidemiological studies to explore the association between dietary choline and depressive symptoms in US general population.•No studies to explore the dose-response relationship between dietary choline and depressive symptoms.•Our results suggested that the intake of dietary choline was negatively associated with the risk of depressive symptoms.•An L-shaped dose-response relationships were found between dietary choline and depressive symptoms in U.S. adults.
