•Biofortified sweet corn possessed higher α-tocopherol and provitamin-A.•Vitamin-E attained peak at 24-DAP, while provitamin-A was highest at 20-DAP.•Transcripts of both vte4 and crtRB1 had the highest peak at 24-DAP.•Transcriptsof vte4 increased α-tocopherol, while crtRB1lowered provitamin-A.•First report on effect of vte4 and crtRB1 genes during kernel stages in sweet corn.
