•QTL3 was detected for fruit cuticular wax and postharvest water loss.•CER1-1 and CER1-3 were candidate genes in QTL3.•CER1-1 and CER1-3 were involved in alkane synthesis to reduce plant water loss.•Coating experiment verified the potential role of alkanes in reducing fruit water loss.
