•- Flat serpentinite pebbles provide new clues on Neanderthal’s behaviour.•- Green pebbles are unique in the repertoire of tools used by Neanderthals at Fumane Cave, Italy, 45 ky BP.•- Petrographic, use wear and residue analyses reveal such tools were specifically used in bone working.•- We explore Neanderthal cognitive criteria of selection and use of such rare items.
