摘要
•The functionalized [CeMIM][NO3] was explored for separating phenols from coal tar.•Brønsted acid/Lewis base and H-bond interactions promoted the separation process.•The E values are higher than 98 % for four phenols.•The IL [CeMIM][NO3] can be recovered without any loss.
