•Tin Begane batholith is huge but intruded in a short period of time at 596 ± 2 Ma.•Geochemically, it comprises normal calc-alkaline and TTG-like granitic facies.•It intruded along a main extensional detachment in a regional transpressive orogen.•Thermal input to the crust by the Tin Begane batholith was most important.
