•Cry1−/− mice had shorter circadian period, compared to WT mice.•Cry2−/− mice had longer circadian period, compared to WT mice.•Period length was not altered in Cry1+/− mice, suggesting functional compensation.•Period length in Cry2+/− mice was longer than WT mice.•Results indicate a haploinsufficiency for Cry2 in generating circadian rhythms.
