Estimating soil water retention curves from soil thermal conductivity measurements

•Both soil water retention and thermal conductivity-water content curves have sigmoid shapes.•A method is proposed to estimate a water retention curve from thermal conductivity-water content curve.•The new model performs well on an independent set of six soils.•The new model has the potential to be applied in the field.
