Evaluation of Hydraulic Resistance of Flow Cells with Commonly Used Solvents for Dye Lasers

We are presenting the estimation of the hydraulic resistance for the different types of flow channels using multi physics code for the several commonly used dye solvents. The hydraulic resistance has been estimated with a several inlet flow velocities ranging from 0.5 m/s to 30 m/s. The velocity profiles and pressure drop across the dye cells have been computed for all types of dye cells. It has been found that the dye cells with flow channels geometry of the convergingstraight-diverging type have almost two times smaller pressure drops in comparison to the straight rectangular flow geometry for the same inlet flow velocity and solvent. The hydraulic resistance of the dye cell is essentially affected by the shape of the flow channel, their cross sections, surface roughness in the flow channel and physical properties of the dye solvents used. The estimation of the hydraulic resistance of the dye cell is important for the dye laser to select the appropriate dye flow system for the essential flow velocities at high repetition rate. The hydraulic resistance of the dye cell dictates the torque requirements of the motor (horse power) to be used for the gear pump in the dye flow system for mandatory higher flow velocities.
