Efficient upcycling of polypropylene-based waste disposable masks into hard carbons for anodes in sodium ion batteries

•Disposable face masks were used as carbon precursors to propose managing the mask wastes.•Mask-derived hard carbons were synthesized using carbonization after sulfonation of masks.•Synthesized carbon powders were used as active materials of anode in sodium-ion batteries.
