•Neurocognition impairments are critical factors in MDD, BD, SZ, and T2DM.•Neurocognition deficits were seen in somatic and psychiatric diagnostic categories.•This overlap could be due to shared genetic and environmental etiological factors.•Future research should focus on transdiagnostic phenotypes of neurocognition.
