•CaSIZ1, a homolog of AtSIZ1, is functional replacement of AtSIZ1.•The nucleus-localized CaSIZ1 was able to interact with CaABI5.•CaSIZ1 was involved in the ABA-induced SUMOylation and salt tolerance in pepper.
