Metagenomics applied to the detection of diarrhea viruses in humans: Systematic Review

•Metagenomics can contribute to the monitoring of infectious agents causing diarrhea outbreaks.•We performed a systematic review to show the importance of viral metagenomics in identifying emerging and re-emerging viruses in middle and low-income countries.•A quantitative analysis was performed of the literature to demonstrate the importance of metagenomics.•The importance of viral metagenomics in the discovery of new viruses was discussed.
