Mind wandering and depression: A status report

•Methodological approaches are very heterogeneous and their interrelation is unclear.•No unambiguous evidence for increased propensity to mind wander in depression.•More experience sampling-based studies with matched healthy controls are needed.•Measures of both mind wandering and rumination should be implemented.•Additional data on meta-awareness and intentionality would be informative.
