•Academic self-concept was positively correlated with academic achievement.•GMV in the DMPFC and right DLPFC was negatively related to academic self-concept.•The right DLPFC volume could significantly predict achievement one year after.•GMV in the right DLPFC mediated the effect of academic self-concept on achievement.
