Formulation of acyclovir (core)-dexpanthenol (sheath) nanofibrous patches for the treatment of herpes labialis

•Electrospun core (acyclovir)-sheath (dexpanthenol) sheets were formulated.•Polyvinylpyrrolidone was selected as a sheath polymer.•Hypromellose/poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(vinyl alcohol) were used as core polymers.•Complete release of both drugs was obtained from fibrous samples within 2000 sec.•Acyclovir-loaded HPMC nanofibers showed the best activity against herpes simplex.
