Oral immunization with attenuated Salmonella encoding an elastase elicits protective immunity against Trichinella spiralis infection

•The mice were orally vaccinated with TsE DNA delivered by attenuated Salmonella.•TsE DNA elicited systemic humoral response and gut mucosal sIgA response.•The vaccine also induced a systemic and local mixed Th1/Th2/ Treg response.•Vaccinated mice showed a significant protection against T. spiralis larval challenge.
