•The risk due to smoking for stroke and its subtypes differs between men and women.•Male smokers (≥ 30 cigarettes/day) are at higher risk of intracerebral hemorrhage.•Female smokers are at higher risk of cerebral infarction/subarachnoid hemorrhage.
