•A portable NMR used to characterize evolution of stationary and sea spray ice.•CPMG experiments showed unimodal T2 distribution for stationary ice.•Sea spray ice has a bimodal T2 distribution at horizontal and vertical orientations.•1D FT STRAFI imaging was used to spatially resolve the sea spray ice accumulation.
