Spatiotemporal and muscle activation adaptations during overground walking in response to lower body added mass

•Muscle activity, double support and single support time changed with added mass.•Mass of up to 4 lb on the lower limb segments did not cause spatiotemporal changes.•Mass of 16 lb on the pelvis caused changes in double and single support times.•Gait speed and stride length were maintained with added mass.
