•The incidence of cervical adenocarcinoma continues to rise, highlighting the differential effectiveness of detecting cervical squamous cell carcinoma and cervical adenocarcinoma with current screening modalities.•The challenge of screening for cervical glandular neoplasia is multifactorial, with issues of specimen sampling, diagnostic interpretation, and education as contributing factors.•Laboratories should use regular retrospective case reviews to educate staff and improve quality assurance in the detection of cervical glandular neoplasia.
